Standard 11
STEM learning experiences integrate all STEM disciplines with an emphasis on processes and practices associated with STEM.
At Somerset Gables, STEM initiatives are being used in all classrooms. Our students, whether they are in reading or math classrooms, are supported to increase engagement and critical-thinking skills through STEM concepts. Creation stations are an example of student-choice activities students have available to them during different times of day. By using the creation station, students independently work on the design process. They provide our students with an opportunity to take their learning to another level. To continue this growth, our educators will continue to modify the Creation Stations and other instructional tools to ensure that our students are using the best possible methods. The Engineering Design Process is an essential aspect of our classroom environment that is reflected in all content. Our educators also include multiple ways to include other models of learning, such as the use of formative assessments. In reading classes, teachers find multiple ways to instruct students on reading comprehension strategies and skills. We often see students using sticky notes to organize details on graphic organizers. In math and other subject areas, students can often be observed writing on desks using Expo Markers to solve problems, or visiting “stations” in classrooms rather than working in a textbook.
STEM in Reading Comprehension
Students will learn to compare and contrast texts on expository text about special regions in Africa using a Venn diagram. Then, using the Venn diagram, students will write on sticky notes animals, plants and other important facts found in each region.
LAFS.2.RI.3.9 Compare and contrast the most important points presented by two texts on the same topic.
